NAACP and Cultural Appropriation in the CNMI
NAACP was founded during 1909 by both white and colored people; Mary White Ovington, Henry Moskowitz, Ida B. Wells, William English Walling, Oswald Garrison Willard, Archibald Grimke, Mary Church Terrel, and W.E.B. Du Bois. The NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It is an organization that carries out civil rights and fights for violence against African Americans in the United States. One of its famous activist was Martin Luther King Jr. We all know him, especially his "I Have a Dream" speech. NAACP is the largest and still ongoing organization that fights for the rights of the colored in the US. This organization is credited for making changes in the law of its country that separates the whites and blacks.
Cultural appropriation is the act of taking or using a culture that is not your own and without showing that you know about it. Many celebrities are getting commented or criticized in the media for doing this. Many people of the public do this too, like wearing a costume of another culture you do not even know about. This topic has been a debate between many people. Bruno Mars got criticized for using the "old" African American style of music into his songs. Katy Perry has been criticized by using the theme of Japanese Geisha for her performance.
The CNMI is a home to many people from around the world. We all have different blood and mixes in our family. Sometimes there are people out there who uses the slang words and using the Chamorro/Carolinian culture even though they do not know a single thing about it. The topic NAACP is relevant to the CNMI because there are people here who are colored. I heard a story from my teacher how he was declined to stay in a hotel because he was colored, now this happened in the states. But I think it is relevant to the CNMI because he is from the CNMI. There are certain things in the island too that screams civil rights.
